What Is the Strands Game?
Strands is a word puzzle game originally introduced by the New York Times. It goes beyond a traditional word search — instead of finding random words, every answer in a Strands puzzle connects to a hidden theme. The puzzle's title gives you a clue, and your job is to uncover all the theme words plus one special word called the spangram that spans the entire board.
Each puzzle uses a 6×8 grid of 48 letters, and every single letter on the board gets used. Nothing is filler. That's what makes Strands uniquely satisfying.
How to Play Strands Game
🎯 Your Goal
1
Find every theme word hidden in the letter grid. Once you’ve found all theme words plus the spangram, you complete the puzzle.
🖱️ Selecting Letters
2
Tap or click individual letters, or drag across connected letters to form a word. Double-tap or hit Submit to lock it in.
⭐ What Is the Spangram?
3
The spangram is the most important word in every Strands puzzle. It’s a word or phrase that defines the theme of the entire board — and it always stretches from one edge of the grid to the opposite edge. Find it early and the rest of the puzzle becomes much easier.
💡 How Hints Work
4
Stuck? Find valid non-theme words to fill your hint meter. Once full, use a hint to highlight part of a theme word. Use them wisely — finishing without hints is the real challenge.
🏆 Complete the Grid
5
Find all theme words and the spangram to clear the entire board. Every letter gets used — nothing is left behind. That’s how you win!
